Executive Board Election Nominees

GSA President Responsibilities

  1. Oversee operations of GSA.
  2. Run Delegate meetings and board meetings.
  3. Collaborate with VP of Programs to ensure operation of programs.
  4. Hold regular meetings with the Dean.
  5. Coordinate Departmental/Graduate School Orientations.
  6. Be aware of the GSA budget and board issues.
  7. Work with the Secretary to create Agenda for meetings.
  8. Present at National Capital Region Orientations.
  9. Sit on a University Council.
  10. Sit on the Commission for Student Affairs.
  11. Attend office hours.


GSA Vice President of Membership Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and preside over cabinet meetings.
  2. Recruit delegates to represent each department.
  3. Ensure that graduate students sit on each university commission or committee.
  4. Monitor delegates' distribution of information to their respective departments.
  5. Send information (agendas, minute, and other pertinent information) to delegates and cabinet members.
  6. Sit on at least one University Commission.
  7. Sit on the Committee for Student Affairs.
  8. Coordinate social programs for members of the graduate community.
  9. Attend office hours.
  10. Recruit student Leadership for Relay for Life Event.
  11. Maintain attendance records for all delegates during delegate body meetings.
  12. Work with the communications chair to distribute information to the delegate body.


GSA Vice President of Programs Responsibilities

  1. Oversee all programs (Travel Fund, Graduate Research & Development, Research Symposium, and Budget Board) while working with each chair to coordinate events.
  2. Coordinate Dialogue with the Dean (at least 1 per semester).
  3. Sit on at least one University Council.
  4. Serve as Main Point of Contact for Event Planning, Production services.
  5. Assist with the planning of Graduate and Professional School Day.
  6. Attend Office hours.
  7. Participate in the planning and implementation of other social events organized by the GSA for the graduate student community of VT.


GSA Secretary Responsibilities

  1. Work with the President to organize the agenda for each of the Delegate / Exec. Board meetings.
  2. Accurately record the minutes from each Delegate /Exec Board meetings.
  3. Sit on at least one commission/committee that works on university/student-life related issues.
  4. Attend office hours.
  5. Participate in the planning and implementation of social events organized by the GSA for the graduate student community of VT.


GSA Treasurer Responsibilities

  1. Prepare and submit annual budget to the Student Budget Board.
  2. Make payments on all accounts billed to the Graduate Student Assembly, including reimbursements for services rendered to the organization.
  3. Be knowledgeable about university policy regarding payments, reallocations, deposits, and budget board contingency funding.
  4. Provide a financial report to the delegate body and executive board during each meeting.
  5. The treasurer shall work with president and executive board members to ensure that all money received from student activities for the academic year is spent.
  6. Sit on at least one university council or committee.
  7. Attend office hours.
  8. Participate in the planning and implementation of social events organized by the GSA for the graduate student community of VT.

Election Guidelines / Procedures
Elections will be held each Spring (this semester: February 2010) at the GSA Delegate Meeting. The elections will occur around 6:00 PM but everyone must be present at the start of the meeting (5:30 PM).

The procedure/guidelines are as follows:

  • The nominations for each position will close just prior to the election of that position (to accommodate any last minute nominations), which will occur in the following order:
    • President
    • Vice President - Membership
    • Vice President - Programs
    • Secretary
    • Treasurer
  • To nominate yourself or another person, submit a general comment to the GSA.
  • Each nominee will answer the same questions, selected by the moderator, which will be submitted before the meeting.
  • The votes will be tallied for each position after the speeches for that position are finished.
  • Each nominee may prepare a one-page sheet that will be available on the GSA website. You may include anything you would like, but please keep it to a page or less. Suggestions include: introduction; statement of interest; qualifications; and ideas.
  • You may wish to provide a handout at the actual meeting. Please bring your own copies.
